BOP Federal Release Scope
The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal inmates, generally from 1982 forward. It does not cover every person with a federal case. A defendant held before trial under a U.S. Marshals Service arrangement may occupy a contract jail bed without yet having a BOP record. A person identified through the official Patrick County Sheriff and jail directory remains in a local custody system even when a federal writ or detainer affects the case. Likewise, a Virginia state prisoner belongs in the VADOC locator, not the BOP search.
BOP search results can document a federal prison episode. Searchers may use a BOP register number or other listed federal number, or search by name with the offered age, race, and sex filters. Those filters help separate namesakes, but the stable register number is stronger when it is known. Compare the complete result before assigning it to a person. The locator may show a facility, a future date, a past date, or language that the person is not in BOP custody.
Search BOP Federal Release Records
Begin at the official BOP inmate locator. Choose the number search when a register, FBI, DCDC, or INS number is known. Otherwise, use the name search and add only enough identifying detail to distinguish likely matches. Record the result exactly as it appears, including the register number, date label, and location text. A future release date is a projection and can change. A past date has a different meaning under BOP’s published explanation.
- Enter the federal identification number, or search the complete legal name with the available filters.
- Compare the register number and displayed identity fields to the known federal case before relying on the match.
- Copy the precise release-date and location labels, including whether the record says the person is not in BOP custody.
- Check the federal court docket when the case stage, sentence, or supervision status remains unclear.
- Search another custody system only when a transfer, detainer, or later episode points to that agency.
The official BOP search screen shown below illustrates the federal entry point. It is a nationwide locator, so the search is not limited to institutions near Patrick County.
The locator’s national scope matters because BOP may assign a sentenced person far from Virginia. Geography alone should not be used to rule out a federal record.
BOP Federal Release Result Fields
The BOP result table provides a compact set of fields. Each has a limited role. Name and register number help identify the federal record. Age, race, and sex are comparison fields displayed by BOP, while location and release date speak to the custody episode. Copy the label and value rather than rewriting a future date as an actual release.
| BOP field | What it establishes | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Name and register number | Identifies the federal inmate record | Confirm the match against the federal case |
| Age, race, and sex | Helps distinguish similar names | These fields do not show custody status alone |
| Release date | Shows the date BOP displays | A future date is projected and may change |
| Location | Names the BOP location or status text | No BOP location does not exclude another custodian |
BOP explains that when the release date is past and no facility location appears, federal prison custody ended on that date. The official BOP record explanation is the source for that interpretation. The screenshot below preserves that context beside the search process.
The explanation supports a finding that BOP custody ended. It does not convert the federal locator into a complete custody or supervision history.
Note: Preserve BOP’s exact date label and the date checked, especially when the displayed release date is still in the future.
BOP Release Status Boundaries
“Released” and “Not in BOP Custody” are agency-specific statements. They do not mean that no other restraint or supervision exists. A federal sentence may be followed by supervised release, which is monitored through the federal court and probation system rather than a BOP institution. Another warrant or case can place the person in a Virginia local jail or VADOC institution. Immigration authorities may also assume custody when a supported handoff occurs.
A discharge from BOP custody is also distinct from release from Patrick County Jail. The county jail’s transaction records can show whether a local episode ended in bond, time served, another form of community release, or transfer. Virginia VINE reports local-jail custody events. VADOC handles state prison custody and Community Corrections supervision. For the combined local search and records path, use the Patrick County released-inmate lookup only when a Patrick County episode is part of the question.
| Question | Correct source |
|---|---|
| Was BOP prison custody active or ended? | BOP locator and BOP records |
| Was the person held before federal trial? | Federal docket, USMS-related case contacts, and the holding jail |
| Is federal supervision active? | Federal court and probation records |
| Did Virginia state custody follow? | VADOC locator and state records |
| Did local Patrick custody end? | Patrick County Jail transaction, VINE, and court record |
USMS Federal Release Record Gap
The U.S. Marshals Service often handles federal pretrial detention, court movement, and transport. It may use contract local beds. Yet research found no general public USMS historic inmate locator comparable to the BOP tool. That gap means a no-result in BOP cannot settle what happened during a pretrial or transport stage. The person may not have entered BOP custody at all, or the relevant event may belong to a holding jail and federal case file.
Build the record from the federal court docket, the sending jail’s destination entry, and authorized case contacts. The Patrick County court routing page and Patrick Circuit Court help identify the local case trail. If a Patrick County record states that the person left on a federal writ or was delivered to a federal custodian, ask for the date, movement code, and destination. Then check BOP once the record supports BOP custody. Do not guess that every federal transfer went directly to a federal prison. The legal case, physical holding site, transporting agency, and final prison system can each be different.
Does no BOP match prove federal release? No. It may reflect name variation, a pretrial USMS stage, an older record outside the stated scope, or custody held by another system.
BOP Federal Release Record Requests
The locator is a starting point, not a full federal file. For a past federal release, keep the register number and the BOP result. Then identify the exact existing record needed, such as a release-date record or custody-status fact. The federal court docket may supply the judgment and later supervision filings, while BOP supplies the prison-custody record. Those records answer different questions and their dates need not match.
No physical BOP facility is listed in Patrick County by this research. No prison address, local release desk, or Patrick County BOP telephone number should be invented. Use the official locator to identify an institution when one is displayed, then use that institution’s official contact path. If no facility is shown for a past release, rely on the locator result, the BOP explanation, and the appropriate federal records process instead of calling Patrick County Jail for a federal prison file.
Keep the search result separate from the judgment. A federal judgment can state the prison term and a later period of supervised release, while the locator reports BOP’s custody date and location. A future date can be recalculated, including through sentence-credit changes, so it should not be announced as a guaranteed exit day. For an older event, preserve the result with its check date and compare it with the federal docket. When Patrick County records also exist, place the local transaction in the chronology without merging the two custody episodes. One file may show a county exit, another a federal admission, and a third the end of BOP custody. That sequence is more accurate than selecting one date and calling it the person’s only release date.
Federal Bureau of Prisons
Public route: BOP Inmate Locator
Coverage: Federal prisoners, generally from 1982 forward
Search keys: Federal number or name with identifying filters
Not covered: Complete USMS history, state custody, local custody, or ICE detention
Note: Ask the agency that created each record; Patrick County Jail cannot supply a complete BOP prison history.
Confirm BOP Federal Release Dates
A sound federal confirmation preserves the BOP register number, the exact release-date label, the location text, and the date the result was checked. When the displayed date has passed and no facility appears, cite BOP’s explanation that its custody ended on that date. Next, check whether the federal case shows supervised release. That step prevents a prison-release finding from being mistaken for the end of all federal supervision.
If evidence points beyond BOP, follow it carefully. A Patrick County sending record can identify a later custodian. A VADOC result can show state custody or supervision. The Patrick County transfer and immigration custody route applies only when a receiving-jail or immigration handoff is supported. No result in any one system proves the person is free from all custody. Use the responsible agency’s transaction and a second source when practical, and arrange the records by time when their updates differ.
